I represented a client who suffered from Guillain Barré Syndrome (GBS). The client obtained a new job that provided health insurance coverage. Her Guillain Barré Syndrome (GBS) was exacerbated and she and her health care provider sought pre-certification for in-patient rehabilitation hospitalization from her new health insurance carrier. The health insurer denied coverage based on a pre-existing condition, and the patient appealed the denial. I convinced the health care facility to accept a letter of protection which is an agreement between the patient and the health care facility that the health care facility would be paid at the successful conclusion of the appeal against the managed care health insurer. Ultimately, the appeal was successful, the rehabilitation facility was paid, and the client recovered dramatically as a result of the inpatient rehabilitation program.
